Injury expert and Sky Sports contributor Ben Dinnery fears that Newcastle United midfielder Jonjo Shelvey’s season could be over after he was conspicuously left out of he squad to take on Manchester City.

The Englishman was left out of the side for Sunday’s 5-0 defeat to the league leaders with no previous mention of an injury.

The 30-year-old had played for 90 minutes in five of the six previous games heading into last weekend but fears of a recurring calf problem that saw him sit out six of the first seven matches this season appear to have materialised.

Speaking on the Premier FPL Injuries YouTube channel Dinnery delivered a damning verdict and could well be the last time we see Shelvey in a black and white shirt.

TIF Thoughts on Shelvey…

Despite playing a huge role in the change of fortunes on Tyneside since the start of the season, the former Liverpool midfielder isn’t expectedto be a big part” of the Magpies future according to transfer insider Dean Jones.

With Shelvey’s contract up at the end of next season it is unlikely that he will be offered a new deal given the St. James’ Park outfit’s newfound riches since the takeover from the Saudi-based PIF.

The north-east club were Europe’s biggest spenders in the January window and will no doubt be looking to strengthen in all areas again this summer.

Kalvin Phillips has been mentioned as a possible arrival in midfield which would perhaps condemn Shelvey to the exit door.
