Journalist Liam Kennedy has stated that Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe is interested in a reunion with Lloyd Kelly and will aim to get the club’s business done early.
The duo worked together previously at Bournemouth. when the current Magpies boss signed him from Bristol City as a 20-year-old in 2019.
Having finished the season so well, Howe will be hoping to keep up that momentum over the summer and into the following campaign with some clever moves in the transfer window.
While speaking as a guest on the Black & White podcast, Kennedy explained that Newcastle will look to sign players as soon as possible and Lloyd could be one of them.
He explained (0:28): He [Howe] said in an ideal world he wants to get business done early. For him, at Bournemouth, it’s the type of thing he has always done.
“He pointed at the time to a signing that he made at Bournemouth, who he is interested in taking to Newcastle, in Lloyd Kelly.
“He said, if we didn’t move when we did for him, we wouldn’t have gotten him because he would have gone to a bigger club if we’d sat and waited.
“And I think there is a sense of that at Newcastle United.”
TIF thoughts on Lloyd Kelly and Newcastle…
It is interesting to hear that the club want to get their summer business sorted early. As is pointed out, Kelly joined Bournemouth back in May 2019, a couple weeks before the window had even officially opened.
Perhaps Howe will repeat the trick again this time around and sign the defender in the early stages of the summer once more.
Would Lloyd Kelly be a good signing for Newcastle?
The centre-back has certainly proven his quality this season. Indeed, still only 23 years of age, Kelly is now captain of the Cherries and has led them back into the Premier League. He was also called a ‘rolls-royce’ by Jonathan Woodgate who was his manager at Bournemouth.
When you add to the fact that Howe knows him, and apparently has entertained the idea of bringing him to Newcastle, this deal could get done sooner rather than later.
