A number of Newcastle United players will be worried ahead of the new owner’s first summer transfer window on Tyneside.

This is according to the football journalist Pete O’Rourke, who has been speaking to This Is Futbol about the Magpies’ plans for the upcoming window.

Do you expect a big transformation at NUFC this summer?

O’Rourke believes the recent improvement under Eddie Howe and the big aspirations coming from the new owners will have some of the current players concerned about their futures.

Since the end of the January transfer window, Newcastle’s form has been turned on its head, with the Magpies now clear of the relegation zone and sitting in the top half.

With Howe’s men now all but safe from the drop, O’Rourke feels there will be some heads already turned to the summer window, with some players concerned about what the future holds for them at St James’ Park:

He said: “I’m sure most of their players in that Newcastle squad are probably worried about their long-term futures at the club, just considering the ambitions that the owners have there to try and get bigger and bigger and improve year on year.

“So yes, I think there’ll be a few players maybe looking over the shoulders, worried what the club have got planned ahead for the next few transfer windows as well.”

How well do you remember Newcastle's January transfer window? An easy one to start with: where did Newcastle sign Bruno Guimaraes from?

TIF Thoughts on O’Rourke’s comments…

We think O’Rourke is absolutely right in what he says here, with the new owners setting their targets high from the moment they arrived on Tyneside.

Since the January window, club captain Jamaal Lascelles has seen his spot in the starting XI fade away, with just four appearances to his name since the middle of February.

And given Howe’s side have performed so well since January, those players who are not currently making an impact on the squad probably should fear for their future.

Five players were brought in during the winter window and have made a huge difference, so it would be no surprise to see them add a number of new faces in the summer to continue the team’s development under Howe.
