Newcastle United are in the market for a holding midfielder in the summer transfer window, according to Pete O’Rourke.

The football journalist has been speaking to This Is Futbol amid recent reports of the Magpies being linked to an established Premier League midfielder.

Would Hojbjerg be a good signing for NUFC?

Reports have recently suggested the Toon could make a £30m move for Tottenham Hotspur defensive midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg this summer.

The Danish midfielder has been a mainstay for the north London side under a number of managers since arriving in the summer of 2020.

With the Tyneside club set for their first summer window under the new ownership, O’Rourke claimed a holding midfielder appears to be on the agenda:

“Interesting, this one. Newcastle obviously are maybe in the market fordefensive midfielder, and Hojbjerg, for me, I think he’s among the top defensive midfielders in the league. I think he’s had a good season for Tottenham this season as well,” said O’Rourke.

How well do you remember Newcastle's January transfer window? An easy one to start with: where did Newcastle sign Bruno Guimaraes from?

TIF Thoughts on O’Rourke’s comments…

Hojbjerg has played a big role in the Tottenham squad since signing, with 96 appearances already to his name in less than two seasons (via Transfermarkt).

The Dane may not be the most exotic of names the Toon have been linked with, however, he does hold a massively underrated trait of barely ever getting injured, which has seen him become a reliable performer for the Lilywhites.

Whether Newcastle go for Hojbjerg or not, we think a solid defensive midfielder would certainly be a good option in the summer with Bruno Guimaraes and Joelinton showing their worth in front of goal under Eddie Howe.
