Newcastle United are facing competition ahead of the summer to acquire the services of Hugo Ekitike from Reims.

This is according to Fabrizio Romano, who was speaking about the 19-year-old’s future ahead of the summer window on his latest Here We Go podcast.

Would Ekitike be a good signing?

And the transfer expert believes Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund are targeting the young Frenchman as they attempt to replace Erling Haaland.

The Toon have been linked with Ekitike for months now, with a potential switch back in January heavily suggested, but they were unable to get a deal over the line.

However, ahead of the summer window, it is believed the Magpies are still looking to strengthen up top – but may have to act fast if they want to avoid missing out on Ekitike.

Romano said: “He’s one of the players that Borussia Dortmund have on their list to replace Erling Haaland. Because they signed [Karim] Adeyemi, but they want one more striker.

“But Newcastle are on it since January, so Newcastle pushing on Ekitike, Borussia Dortmund are considering him an option.”

How well do you remember Newcastle's January transfer window? An easy one to start with: where did Newcastle sign Bruno Guimaraes from?

TIF Thoughts on Romano’s comments…

This will come as a huge blow for PIF and Newcastle, who had reportedly identified him as a priority target.

Romano does suggest the Toon are still interested in Ekitike, so we do wonder whether the draw of playing Premier League football may give them an advantage over Dortmund.

However, the German side have a list of great strikers who have developed at the Westfalenstadion over the years, with Robert Lewandowski, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Haaland all plying their trade at Dortmund.

So the Bundesliga side could certainly provide him with an attractive offer, meaning Eddie Howe may have a challenge on his hands if he wants to land the youngster.
