Alan Shearer has admitted on the latest episode of Pod on the Tyne that he doesn’t agree with PIF’s lofty ambitions for Newcastle United.

The future of Newcastle was flipped on its head late last year when PIF were finally given the green light to complete the purchase from Mike Ashley, and with it came huge ambitions and plans for a team that were still winless in the Premier League at the time.

Amanda Staveley, who has been the face of the takeover for so long, admitted on the day PIF bought the Magpies that they were aiming to deliver a Premier League trophy to Tyneside within the next 5-10 years and be able to compete with the likes of Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain.

When asked if he believes in those aims and thinks they could become a reality in the near future, Shearer wasn’t too confident.

He said: “In realistic terms, is it going to happen? I don’t expect it to happen, it’s not something I would have said myself, but let’s hope it does. But I’m not expecting it. Do you know what, I don’t really care. It’s just a huge improvement on what’s gone on.”

Will Newcastle win the league within 10 years?

TIF Thoughts on Newcastle’s future ambitions…

Considering how wealthy PIF are, it shouldn’t be much of a shock that the new owners have very big ambitions, as they wouldn’t be in the game of owning a football club just to participate – they will want to see some return on their investment.

How well do you remember Newcastle's January transfer window? An easy one to start with: where did Newcastle sign Bruno Guimaraes from?

However, considering how long Manchester City and Liverpool have been ahead of the rest of the Premier League, it just shows how big of a gap they have to bridge in order to even be competitive at the right end of the table – never mind pipping one of the big clubs to the top spot.
