Journalist Keith Downie has claimed to This Is Futbol that Newcastle United may go back in for Hugo Ekitike in the summer.

Ekitike was on the radar of Premier League club Newcastle in the January transfer window, but a deal failed to go through after the youngster wanted to hold off for summer interest.

Ekitike has burst onto the scene in France this season having featured 25 times in all competitions for Stade Reims, where he has scored 10 goals and registered four assists, however, he did pick up an injury in February which saw him side-lined for three months.

With Newcastle showing interest in January for the French forward, Downie spoke with This Is Futbol and claimed that the Magpies may well show further interest in the summer after a reported unsuccessful bid in the previous window.

“Ekitike, he made it clear he’s wanting to sign him already. That was a player that the club have sort of highlighted to Eddie Howe and Eddie Howe gave them the green light to go for him and January thought he was getting him. So I wouldn’t be surprised if they return for Ekitike. Listening to the Reims President last week. He said there’s not a club in Europe that hasn’t shown an interest in him. So it sounds like they had some competition in the could probably pick the price there,” Downie said.

TIF Thoughts on Jones’s comments…

Ekitike is just 19-years-old and he has been superb for Reims this season, he is their top scorer in Ligue 1, averaging a goal every 130 minutes, which is the seventh-best in the entire division, a remarkable stat for such a young player.

Newcastle have lacked goals this season, their top scorer is Callum Wilson who has netted just six times in the league, and he has featured just once this calendar year due to injury, so it is almost certain that Howe will look to bring in a forward to the club in the summer, and Ekitike could be a good option.
