While speaking on The Footballer’s Podcast, Callum Wilson has heaped praise on a Newcastle United transfer target.

Newcastle are in desperate need of a reliable goal scorer that can also stay fit for the majority of a season, with Wilson still the club’s top scorer this season with six league strikes, but hasn’t been on the pitch since the end of December.

Who would you be better for Newcastle?

Wilson!

Toney!

Therefore, it’s no surprise that Eddie Howe’s side have been linked with moves for high profile strikers such as Dominic Calvert-Lewin, although he’s had his own injury issues this term, and former Magpie, Ivan Toney.

It’s the latter that Wilson has heaped praise on after his stunning full debut Premier League season.

(20:45) “He’s shown he can play in the Premier League and albeit he might want to go on and think that the grass is greener and go on to better things, but sometimes it’s just about applying your trade.

“A lot of people will probably be like, it’s your first season in the Premier League, can you do it again? Obviously, he’s a great striker so as long as he keeps proving people wrong, if he stays another season and does the same, his move might be bigger than what it would be now.”

TIF Thoughts on Toney…

How well do you remember Newcastle's January transfer window? An easy one to start with: where did Newcastle sign Bruno Guimaraes from?

It has been widely reported that the Magpies do hold an interest in Toney after seeing their intentions to sign Darwin Nunez get knocked back, however, with the striker having already pulled on the black and white shirt, it could be a risk to go back to his old stomping ground where his time was less than successful with just four appearances.

Toney has impressed with his 14 goals that have certainly helped the Bees all but survive the relegation battle, but as Wilson says, he could be better off staying one more season with Brentford and proving he’s not a one-season wonder.
