Newcastle United failed to push themselves further up the Premier League table after a narrow loss to title challengers Liverpool, however, footage has since emerged that shows a missed foul that could have changed the game for the Magpies.
Liverpool prevailed as 1-0 victors on their trip to St. James’ Park thanks to a 19th-minute goal from Naby Keita and some stone wall defending against several Newcastle chances that could have levelled the scoreline.
Should this have been a red card?
There were a number of challenges throughout the game with both sides picking up a number of yellow cards during the game, however, one player who got away with a possibly dangerous challenge was Liverpool forward, Sadio Mane.
After the game finished footage emerged on Twitter, showing a different angle of the tackle which saw Mane stamp down onto the leg of Newcastle goalkeeper Martin Dubravka as the player flew in to compete for the ball.
This miss could prove very costly for Newcastle as playing against ten men could have changed the tide of the battle and the hosts could have had more chances to level the scoring and secure a hard-fought point, which they would have fully deserved.
TIF Thoughts on the Mane challenge…
While Liverpool were the better team throughout the game, we think they were incredibly lucky to not lose their man for this challenge on Duvbraka.
In the clip, you can see by the time Mane goes for the challenge, the goalkeeper has the ball in his hands and complete control of the ball, which points to a foul and a booking even more so.
Mane has been lucky in the last couple of games for incidents that could and perhaps should have resulted in a card being shown, with a slap on Everton midfielder Allan being missed during the Merseyside derby last weekend. This is just another mistake where the standard of refereeing in this country has been called into question and I think Newcastle fans have a genuine gripe with this one, Mane was extremely lucky to not see red.
Should Mane have been sent off?
