Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Manchester United are discussing the possibility of signing Ajax centre-back Jurrien Timber ‘internally.’

It has been no surprise to see incoming United boss Erik ten Hag linked with a plethora of his Eredivisie-winning squad at Ajax.

Some of his 2018/19 Champions League side have also been tipped to make the switch to Old Trafford including Frenkie de Jong and Matthijs de Ligt and journalist Jonathan Shrager took to Twitter this week to reveal that there is a belief that United are the frontrunners for 20-year-old centre-back Timber.

Speaking on his YouTube channel Romano has said that the defender is being looked at but nothing has been agreed just yet:

“One of the names mentioned in the last 48 hours is Jurrien Timber.

“The centre-back from Ajax is a player that of course Erik ten Hag knows so well. He is a player that is doing fantastic with Ajax so the situation is pretty clear it’s being discussed internally at Manchester United.

“He is a player that is part of Manchester United’s ideas since long time of course now with ten Hag the link is direct but at the moment we are not yet at the stage of the done deal that many of you are asking me.”

The club finished the season 35 points off title winners Manchester City and with a goal difference, 73 worse off at a neutral mark the lowest inside the top eight.

Timber was a key figure in the Ajax side that conceded just 19 league goals this term and his value has almost trebled since the end of the last campaign, not at a career-high £27m on Transfermarkt meaning that United could be looking at one for the future as well as the present.
