Manchester United face some ‘important days’ ahead in their quest to sign Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong in the summer.

This is according to Fabrizio Romano, who was speaking about the Dutchman on his latest YouTube video discussing the Red Devils’ transfer plans.

Do you see De Jong leaving Barcelona for Man Utd?

No

No

De Jong has made 31 appearances this season for Barca, in which he has been able to provide three goals and three assists, though he has missed a handful of games through injuries (via Transfermarkt).

The 25-year-old could certainly provide a fresh lease of life to the United midfield, with a 91% pass accuracy rate over the 2021/22 campaign to date (via SofaScore).

However, Romano believes there will be some crucial days ahead for the Red Devils if they are to convince De Jong his future should be spent at Old Trafford.

He said: “So still early stages, but for sure, Manchester United have an interest. And now it’s time for Barcelona to discuss internally about Frenkie and to make decisions as soon as possible, because they are in a rush. Xavi was pretty clear.

“He wants to make decisions, not at the end of August, not end of July, but now – May and June is time to decide. And so for Frenkie de Jong, we are entering into important days. Let’s see what happens with Manchester United.”

TIF Thoughts on Romano’s comments…

This will certainly get a number of United fans who will be hoping to see a reunion between Erik ten Hag and De Jong this summer at Old Trafford.

However, there will certainly be a huge debate in the Dutchman’s head about whether he is willing to sacrifice Champions League football with Barcelona to make the move to Manchester.

But if United do manage to secure De Jong, we feel it would certainly be a step in the right direction with the club looking to press the reset button under Ten Hag.
