Journalist Fabrizio Romano has claimed that Manchester United are interested in bringing Frenkie de Jong to the club in the summer.

There have been recent reports that De Jong is linked with a move to the Premier League with Manchester United showing heavy interest in his signature. United have recently announced that Erik ten Hag will be their manager next season, and the Dutch duo have worked together previously at Ajax.

De Jong came through the youth academy at Ajax, before he signed for Barcelona for £77.4 million in 2019, and he has gone on to make 139 appearances in all competitions whilst scoring 13 goals and registering 17 assists.

With the reports that United are interested in De Jong, Romano confirmed this on his YouTube channel and said that contacts have been made between the two clubs.

“There are contacts between Manchester United and Frenkie de Jong’s agents, it’s true, there are contacts also to understand the whole situation, to understand the potential price. So Manchester United are interested in Frenkie de Jong, this is for sure,” Romano said.

TIF Thoughts on Romano’s comments…

De Jong has had a mixed season for Barcelona in terms of stats, in La Liga he is ranked 12th in terms of average player rating (7.08), he is ranked seventh in terms of accurate passes on average per game (46.6) and he is ranked sixth in terms of average key passes per game (1.4), as per Sofascore.

Due to the introduction of Ten Hag at Old Trafford, the transfer looks increasingly likely, but with United potentially not having any European football at all, this may be something that would put off the Dutch star.

Barcelona have already qualified for the Champions League, so it could be hard to see him move away from the club, to a side that isn’t playing in the competition but if United offer a significant fee, then Barcelona may have to accept.
