Fabrizio Romano has been speaking on The Action Network YouTube channel about Newcastle United’s interest in Aaron Hickey.

It has been reported in the past that Newcastle United have a fee already in place with Aston Villa to complete the signing of on-loan defender Matt Targett, which could very likely be taken up this summer given how big of a role he’s played under Eddie Howe.

Who would you rather sign permanently?

Hickey!

Hickey!

Targett!

Targett!

However, it appears that Howe is not going to settle for just Targett, or even sign him at all as there have been links to Atletico Madrid’s Renan Lodi, which would be the club’s third Brazilian of the squad, but now there appears to be another target.

Romano has revealed that the Scotland youngster Hickey is someone on the Magpies’ radar.

(13:13) “Another player they’re following for a long time, as many other top clubs, is Aaron Hickey, the Bologna left-back and Scottish player who is a really talented boy.

I live in Italy and follow the Serie A and this boy is really really special, a very good left-back and they will go for a left-back in the summer.”

How well do you remember Newcastle's January transfer window? An easy one to start with: where did Newcastle sign Bruno Guimaraes from?

The Scottish youngster has been plying his trade out in Serie A for the last two seasons and is now attracting interest from Newcastle and Arsenal and with these high-level Premier League clubs interested, another Scottish full-back could be heading to England this summer.

While Targett has been a solid performer for the Magpies, he ranks fifth in the WhoScored ratings, it appears that Howe is certainly not content with his performances or just wants some more competition with two full-backs being linked with both Lodi and Hickey younger than Targett it could point towards the club building towards the future.
