Liverpool’s season ended in disappointing fashion, missing out on the Premier League title by a point and then falling short in the Champions League final, losing 1-0 to a Vinicius Jr strike against Real Madrid. It took some inspired goalkeeping from Thibaut Courtois to keep the Reds at bay.

Michael Owen’s post game punditry has got people talking though as he claimed Liverpool were still the best team in Europe despite the result. The Reds were just two wins away from a historic quadruple, losing just four games in all competitions all year, falling just short of immortality.

Journalist John McGinley wasn’t happy with Owen’s comments, going on Twitter to say: “Michael Owen calling Liverpool the best team in Europe after being bodied by a title winning Real Madrid side in the Champions League final, after they also beat the holders, PSG and Man City is one of the most absurd pieces of punditry ever.”

It isn’t an absurd comment when you consider what Jurgen Klopp and this Liverpool team have achieved in recent years, not to mention this season. They played every game possible and were agonisingly close to greatness.

The Reds certainly had the majority of the play in the final, forcing an inspired Courtois performance to stop them. Klopp’s side had 24 attempts compared to four of their opponent, so McGinley to claim they were bodied is extreme.

However, to say that just after Real Madrid have won the Champions League is probably a bit disrespectful, he should’ve celebrated the achievements of Madrid, a team Owen played for as well as Liverpool. While it seems odd to make that claim after losing a major final, you can certainly see why he thinks that.
