Leicester City’s Europa Conference League hopes were ended on Thursday night as they crashed out of the competition after tasting defeat in Italy.
English forward Tammy Abraham scored after just 11 minutes to get the hosts off to the perfect start, giving them the lead on aggregate and on the night.
Do Leicester need an overhaul in the summer?
Unfortunately for Brendan Rodgers’ side, they couldn’t follow suit from the first leg to make the scoreline 1-1 and thus exited the competition to Jose Mourinho’s side.
During the game, former Roma and Leicester boss Claudio Ranieri was shown on the big screen, receiving a rapturous round of applause from both sets of fans. Gary Lineker reacted to the footage shared by BT by saying: “Was a beautiful moment.”
TIF thoughts on the moment…
It’s no surprise to see the reception he received, especially given the fact he guided Leicester to that famous Premier League title in the 2015/16 season against all the odds. The Italian will always be a Leicester legend for that and loved by the supporters.
He also had two stints in charge of Roma and was born there so had the affiliation with the home supporters as well as the travelling Leicester fans on the night.
So it was certainly a touching moment to see the 70-year-old receive such an ovation by both sets of fans despite their teams being embroiled in a huge clash on the pitch.
