Phil Hay has claimed that Leeds United are interested in signing youngster Calvin Ramsay.
The full-back slots are a serious area of concern for Leeds, and were for large parts of this season with Stuart Dallas filling in there as Cody Drameh headed out on loan, while summer signing Junior Firpo has failed to set the league alight, managing just a 6.49 WhoScored rating in the league and looks to not be worth his £13.5m price tag so far.
Do Leeds need a new right back?
Yes!
No!
Now the situation is even worse with Dallas picking up a huge injury and Luke Ayling requiring end-of-season surgery, it’s no surprise that Leeds are in the market for further reinforcements in the summer, and Scotland youngster Ramsay is a serious target, according to Hay.
Ramsay is currently plying his trade for Aberdeen and was called ‘elite’ by Dons chairman Dave Cormack. Speaking on The Phil Hay Show, Hay revealed him to be one of Leeds’ targets.
He said: “Orta isn’t the only recruitment person at Leeds, he has a team; there is at least one English person in there, who will have knowledge of this country – Orta will have knowledge of this country as well.
“They’re looking at Calvin Ramsay at Aberdeen – defender up there, right-back, [a] young teenager who’s very, very talented.
“Again, I think that is a good player to take on, I would only question how much that changes your side overnight, but it has to be said that actually, right-back is a position that they need to start preparing for.”
TIF Thoughts on Leeds liking Calvin Ramsay…
At just 18 years old, Hay’s concerns over how much Ramsay would improve Leeds immediately is a valid one, however, the fact that Champions League finalists Liverpool are interested in him could point towards the youngster being more ready for the Premier League than people may think – journalist Ryan Taylor previously labelled him ‘unbelievable’, while ex-Leeds goalkeeper Paul Robinson recently hailed his ‘brilliant’ season.
Ayling has been a tremendous player for Leeds, racking up 220 appearances after costing just £783,000 and will turn 31 in August, so he certainly isn’t the future – and Ramsay could be the answer. Especially if he can play alongside experienced centre-backs such as Liam Cooper and Diego Llorente, this could be a very exciting signing for Leeds.
