Journalist Dean Jones has told This Is Futbol that Leeds United will be looking for a striker with top-flight experience, although not necessarily someone who is first-choice at their club.

Phil Hay recently claimed that Leeds will be looking to bring in a forward that has Premier League experience in the summer rather than someone from abroad that doesn’t know the league well.

Leeds struggled this season, especially in front of goal, with the absence of Patrick Bamford for the majority of the campaign leaving them short in attack. The Whites netted 43 times in the league – the second-lowest of teams outside the bottom three.

With the lack of goals for Leeds this season, Jones claimed that when searching for a new striker in the summer, Jesse Marsch may seek a player who is currently playing in England – and perhaps from one of the relegated sides.

He said: “They obviously went and got Rodrigo and that one didn’t work out too well, so they need to find somebody that is adaptable, and that probably means finding someone from the Premier League already.

“So let’s see what they could do. But ultimately, I think they’ll be looking to snap up players that are on the fringes elsewhere or have just been relegated.”

TIF Thoughts on Jones’ comments…

Bamford’s absence has been a massive reason for Leeds’s poor season, as he netted 17 times in the Premier League in 2020/21, whilst also chipping in with seven assists. Whereas, the highest goal contributor this season was Raphinha with 14 – 10 fewer than the English forward in the campaign just gone.

With the injury woes of Bamford, it is unclear how long his recovery process will be and whether the injuries will reoccur next season, so it would be smart for Marsch to bring in a striker that has Premier League experience to prevent similar issues from happening next term.
