Leeds United reporter Conor McGilligan appears to believe the Whites will sign Eddie Nketiah from Arsenal this summer.

Who was sent off in his first game as captain?

The Elland Road outfit secured their Premier League survival with a 2-1 win at Brentford on the final day after being helped out by Burnley’s defeat to Newcastle United. Given they finished in the top half during the 2020/21 campaign, they will be looking to improve massively next term – and to do so, they will likely need new recruits.

A striker could well be on the wishlist, and McGilligan already feels like he knows he could be coming in. He wrote on Twitter, “It’ll be Eddie Nketiah, won’t it?”

TIF Thoughts on Nketiah…

There was certainly a defeatist feel to McGilligan’s tweet, although it is not clear why. Leeds clearly need a striker, with Patrick Bamford injured for the majority of this campaign, while backup option Tyler Roberts managed just one goal in the league.

£9m-valued Nketiah, who was described as ‘phenomenal’ by current manager Mikel Arteta, has had to wait for his chance at Arsenal, but he showed glimpses of what he can do in front of goal this term.

He netted five strikes in eight starts towards the end of the season, including two in a 4-2 victory over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, and has a healthy 23 goals in 92 games for the club considering the majority of those appearances have come from the bench.

He is already familiar with Leeds, too, having scored five times in 19 appearances as the Yorkshire team earned promotion to the Premier League in 2019/20. Nketiah is soon to be out of contract, so it would surely be an astute signing on a free.
