According to journalist Dean Jones, Leeds United have a 90% chance of signing Brenden Aaronson this summer if they avoid relegation.

The Whites are currently in the bottom three and fighting for Premier League survival, but that does not mean they cannot afford to look beyond this campaign. Aaronson was a target in January, and the arrival of Jesse Marsch, who he played under at Red Bull Salzburg, will only further fuel speculation.

This was a low point in Leeds United's history, but how many points did they get in the 2003/04 campaign?

Speaking to Give Me Sport, Jones suggested the Whites have a very strong chance of capturing the USA international. He said, “It would kill their chances of signing players like Brenden Aaronson as well (being relegated). He is a prime target, and I think if they stay up, there is a 90 per cent chance that Brendan Aaronson signs, but if Leeds are relegated, that does not happen.”

TIF Thoughts on Aaronson

Of course, a drop down to the Championship would surely all but end their chances of bringing Aaronson to Elland Road. The Yorkshire outfit would likely be unable to match Salzburg’s £30m valuation without top-tier finances, while the 21-year-old would surely not swap European football for a promotion charge.

If Leeds can haul themselves out of the drop zone and therefore bring Aaronson in, though, they could be getting their hands on an exciting talent. The attacking midfielder already has 18 caps for his country and is slowly adapting to life in Austria, having scored 13 goals and provided 15 assists in 64 matches for his current employers. When Marsch was also at Salzburg, he said Aaronson understood his footballing philosophy. This signing would undoubtedly be one for Marsch as well as the club – it remains to be seen where the former Philadelphia Union man ends up next season.
