According to journalist Jacque Talbot, Leeds United star man, Kalvin Phillips is set to sign a new deal to keep him at Elland Road next season at the end of the summer.

Leeds suffered a hugely disappointing season in 21/22, battling it out for their Premier League survival after the sacking of fan-favourite manager Marcelo Bielsa and bringing in former RB Leipzig boss Jesse Marsch. The fight came down to the last day as their 2-1 win away at Brentford secured them 16th place and their safety as they finished just three points above Burnley and the last spot in the drop zone.

A big reason for the awful season and lack of consistency was down to a plethora of injuries to some of their most important players. This included Patrick Bamford. who only managed nine Premier League appearances, Stuart Dallas, Luke Ayling, Adam Forshaw, and Kalvin Phillips.

The latter did manage to make 20 appearances despite the injuries and has shown himself to be a key figure for the Whites since they arrived back in the Premier League. That is why Leeds fans will be extremely satisfied to hear Talbot reveal he is set to sign a new contract with the club amid transfer speculations.

He told GiveMeSport, “With Kalvin Phillips, Leeds have always said to me that he will be signing a contract at the end of the summer.

“It was implied that would be [the case] if they survived in the Premier League and they have survived, so you kind of think Kalvin Phillips would be signing the contract.”

TIF Thoughts on Talbot’s comments…

Should Phillips stay at Leeds?

No

Of course, should this happen, Leeds fans will be absolutely buzzing as this is a ‘wish’ that many have been hoping comes true, though of course nothing is official at this moment in time.

Leeds will want to keep as many of their biggest names to give them a chance at some consistency going to next season and to help ease in their new summer signings, one of which has already arrived in Brenden Aaronson.

Phillips is one of the key men they will want to keep as his stats and style of play are going to be integral to the Yorkshire team’s survival next season. Despite not racking up a huge amount of minutes this season he averaged 2.4 tackles, 1.2 interceptions., 1.5 dribbles, and 3.3 long balls with 84.6% passing accuracy. These numbers only get more impressive when you look at his Fbref stats, ranking in the 98th percentile for pressures with 28.42 per game, 97th percentile for tackles, and 96th for blocks with 2.37 per game.

The Yorkshire Pirlo has been a fan-favourite and despite the poor season and potential nerves after the season, securing a player of his standard will only give the fans peace of mind regarding their engine room which is going to be very important.
