Fabrizio Romano has been speaking on the Here We Go podcast about Manchester United’s chances of signing Frenkie de Jong.

Manchester United are likely set to go through a massive overhaul and reboot this summer with new manager Erik ten Hag wanting to put his stamp on the team, Ralf Rangnick still looking to continue his consultancy role part-time and several players such as Juan Mata, Edinson Cavani and Jesse Lingard are leaving the club.

Would you like Man United to sign De Jong?

Yes!

Yes!

No!

No!

It appears that a new central midfielder could be high up on the list of priority transfers this summer with the likes of Declan Rice, Kalvin Phillips and also De Jong all linked with a move to Old Trafford this summer.

However, Romano has dealt an early summer transfer window blow to Man United fans and Ten Hag over their reported transfer target De Jong.

(12:00) “Many Barcelona fans are asking every single day about De Jong as well as Man United fans also because it’s a rumour that we have around, from what I’m told, as I already said here last week De Jong wants to play Champions League football, so that’s why it’s not going to be easy for Manchester United to approach him.

Of course, the relationship with Erik ten Hag could be an option to change the situation but at the moment, I’m told that for Frenkie de Jong, the priority is Champions League football and the priority is Barcelona.”

Manchester United fans, do you remember how many points you picked up in seasons gone by? Let's find out, starting with 2020/21

TIF Thoughts on De Jong…

As Romano alluded to on the podcast, Erik ten Hag being appointed as the new Manchester United manager could perhaps persuade De Jong to join the Red Devils, but with their chances of finishing in the Champions League all but gone, it would perhaps be a step too far for the new boss.

De Jong would be an almighty coup for Man United and a statement of intent as he has a bucket load of experience playing in the Champions League, he already knows Ten Hag’s system and style of play very well during their time together at Ajax, but if the midfielder is wanting to stay in Barcelona, it’s unlikely he will indeed leave.
