Journalist Paul Brown has claimed that Alex Iwobi may lose his place in the Everton side next season if they remain in the Premier League.

Iwobi found himself as more of a rotation player in the early stages of the campaign for Everton, making just 20 starts in the Premier League, but he has more recently seen his game time increased and has started the last 10 for the Toffees.

The Nigerian has shown his versatility this season for Everton – especially under Frank Lampard – as in his recent run of games, he has featured on either wing, behind the striker and in central midfield.

Despite the recent run of games for Iwobi, Brown has claimed that he may be someone who is replaced next season if the Toffees remain in the Premier League, whilst speaking with GiveMeSport.

He said: “If they stay up and they are in any way able to strengthen, I’m sure that’s an area that Lampard would like to improve on. So he’ll have his work cut out staying in the team long-term, I think.”

TIF Thoughts on Brown’s comments…

Despite a recent improvement in form for Iwobi – he has achieved a player rating of 7.1 or above in four of his last five games (as per SofaScore) – he has been relatively poor overall this season, as he is ranked 12th in terms of average player rating at Everton (6.81), ranked 10th in terms of average accurate passes per game (19.2) and has just two goals to his name.

Everton have been poor this season, however, if they win their game in hand, they can secure Premier League safety, but due to their below-par season, they may make widespread changes in the summer.

Iwobi’s recent performances may be enough to keep his place in the side next season, especially with the versatility that he has shown, so it will be interesting to see if he does get replaced in the summer.
