According to journalist Tom Barclay, Crystal Palace are likely to sign Cheick Doucoure this summer.

The Eagles are set to be one midfielder down next term, with Conor Gallagher looking like he will return to Chelsea to become part of Thomas Tuchel’s first-team squad. As such, a new recruit in the middle of the park would not go amiss, and Lens’ Doucoure is said to be amongst Patrick Vieira’s summer targets.

Speaking to GiveMeSport, Barclay discussed Palace’s interest in the 22-year-old Malian, saying they are very keen to capture his services. He explained: “I’m not sure how much further on it is, but it’s definitely one they’re looking at. It’s very, very likely to be one they’re looking to get done.

“I think it’s a pretty good fee, he’s a good age at 22 and they’re looking for a midfielder.

“I think the high pressing element can be quite key, particularly with Gallagher leaving, so I’d be surprised if it didn’t come off.”

TIF Thoughts on Doucoure…

The signings of Marc Guehi, Gallagher (albeit only on loan), Michael Olise and Odsonne Edouard indicate Palace are looking to sign younger players, and Doucoure would fit into that new transfer policy. The Mali international made 34 appearances for Lens this campaign, scoring once and providing four assists.

His best work is done in defence, though, with him averaging 2.2 tackles and two interceptions per game in the French top flight. At a reported price of £15m, there is little to lose for Palace with this deal, and it is one they should look to get done as soon as possible.
