Injury specialist Ben Dinnery has dropped a worrying claim about Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez ahead of their game against Burnley as it seems the player may miss out due to a knock picked up in training.

Aston Villa have steered clear of a relegation dogfight since the arrival of Steven Gerrard as they currently sit 14th in the Premier League table, only four points off a possible top-half finish if results go their way. This means any sort of injuries or suspensions for key players at this point in the season could see their campaign fizzle out, and according to recent reports, this could quickly become reality for the Midlands outfit.

Gerrard appeared to be unsure as to whether Martinez could feature, stating in his pre-match press conference: “The ‘keeper, Emi, has got a small issue, but we’re hoping he’s going to pull through.”

Specialist Dinnery shed light on the potential setback on his Premier FPL Injuries YouTube channel, claiming there is no certainty around the Argentinian’s return and that time will tell if he can return to the pitch this evening.

Do you remember where Aston Villa made their signings from? Take our quiz to find out! First up, who did Frederic Guilbert turn out for immediately before moving to Villa Park?

Speaking on this morning’s episode, he stated: “Another key update from Villa was a slight concern or doubt over Emiliano Martinez, who picked up a knock in training on Tuesday. Now, we’re still optimistic of a return, but there are no guarantees at this point. We’ll see how that injury evolves and how he responds to treatment.”

TIF Thoughts on Martinez’s injury…

Martinez has been a crucial player for Villa since his arrival from Arsenal back in September 2020, winning the team’s Player of the Season award for the 2020/21 campaign after picking up 15 clean sheets for the Villans.

The Argentinian has 11 clean sheets and has only made one mistake leading to a goal throughout the entire season. Despite being safe from the threat of relegation, losing a player of his stature and ability could be crucial for their hopes of a top-10 finish.

Will Martinez start?
