Alan Shearer has been speaking on Match of the Day 2 about what he expects from Aston Villa this summer.

Despite some lavish spending last summer and then once again in January under new manager Steven Gerrard, the Villans have had a relatively poor season, finding themselves in the bottom half and behind teams such as Crystal Palace and Brighton & Hove Albion.

Will Villa finish in the top eight next season?

Yes!

Yes!

No!

No!

With their Premier League safety secured a while ago, it appears that Villa are already planning for the summer having completed the permanent signing of Philippe Coutinho, and it looks set to be another busy and exciting transfer window for the Midlands side.

Shearer was asked on Match of the Day which of the mid-table clubs he expects to see kick on next season and become the best of the rest.

He replied: “Probably Aston Villa because Steven wouldn’t have gone in there – they’ve already backed him with Digne and Coutinho already with that signing, and I expect another four or five, I would think, that would come in.

“The expectations from him and from everyone at the club would be to try and see them the best of the rest.”

Do you remember where Aston Villa made their signings from? Take our quiz to find out! First up, who did Frederic Guilbert turn out for immediately before moving to Villa Park?

Aston Villa do in fact have one of the wealthiest sets of owners in the Premier League, so to expect more outlandish spending this summer may not be out of the question, although they won’t likely have a £100m transfer fee entering their accounts like they did last year via the sale of Jack Grealish.

An area that could do with some improvements is the backline, with Villa having only managed to keep 12 league clean sheets all campaign and with the likes of Ollie Watkins, Danny Ings, Coutinho, and Emiliano Buendia going forward, if they can sort themselves out at the back, they could be in for a big season next term.
