There have been reports that Aston Villa are interested in Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips ahead of the summer transfer window.

It has recently been reported that Phillips is on the radar of Aston Villa and the Leeds midfielder is ready to quit the club even if they remain in the Premier League. Leeds currently sit in the bottom three of the table with just two games left to play.

Phillips has been out of action for large parts of this season after he picked up an injury on the 5 December, but he has recently returned to action for Leeds and he has featured six times this calendar year.

Villa did some good business in the January transfer window, by bringing in Lucas Digne from Everton and Philippe Coutinho from Barcelona on loan, and they have been linked with other players such as Yves Bissouma, ahead of the upcoming window.

We noted two potential knock-on effects if Phillips was to join Villa in the summer transfer window.

Gerrard will be buzzing

Although Phillips has missed large chunks of this season, last term he was a stand-out performer for Leeds in their impressive season back in the Premier League. He had the highest average player rating (7.21), he had the third most amount of tackles on average per game (2.6) and he also had the most amount of average successful long balls on average per game (4.7), as per SofaScore.

With the impressive stats of Phillips, Gerrard would be buzzing if he was able to bring him to Villa Park, especially after the impressive displays last summer from him in EURO 2020 for England.

Bringing in a talented player such as Phillips, this signing could attract more players to the club because it would be a sign of intent and an indication of which direction the club is heading by signing an England international.

Morgan Sanson on the way out

Sanson signed for Villa from Marseille in January of last year, but he has been heavily out of favour, he has featured just 20 times in all competitions for them since, including just three starts in the Premier League this season.

In the last five Premier League games, Sanson has only featured on the bench as an unused substitute three times and didn’t even make the squad for the games against Leicester City and Norwich City (via Transfermakt).

The lack of game time for Sanson this season may be an indication that he could be shown the door at Villa Park in the summer, and if Gerrard opts to bring in a midfielder such as Phillips, then the Frenchman would surely slip further down the pecking order and almost definitely leave the club.
