Derby have been in administration since September and need a change of owner to get out of their current situation after being relegated from the Championship. Chris Kirchner is believed to be in pole position, having been given exclusivity until this Saturday, but former Newcastle United owner Ashley is now said to be interested in the club after previously being linked.

Speaking on Monday’s Rams Daily episode, Coles discussed the rumours surrounding the tycoon, and believes his involvement could draw out the process. He said, “You wonder, this week of extending with, apparently, Mike Ashley in the background Nigel, it just further delays things doesn’t it?”

TIF Thoughts on Ashley’s interest

Derby are a footballing institution in England, so it is no surprise to hear there is plenty of interest in taking over. Ashley has previous experience in owning and being involved behind the scenes at football clubs, but it is fair to say he is not popular with the supporters with whom he has come into contact.

Newcastle fans were delighted to see the back of him when he sold the Magpies to the Saudi Arabian Private Investment Fund last year, while Rangers fans were also unhappy with the 57-year-old after he bought a stake in the 55-time Scottish champions. He has a poor track record, unfortunately, and Derby should steer clear as a result.
