Newcastle United striker Chris Wood clearly did not impress in their latest victory at St. James’ Park on Wednesday night.

Toon correspondent for the Shields Gazette, Joe Buck, awarded the New Zealand international with just a 6/10 rating after the game as he went another game without a goal.

Was Chris Wood a bad signing?

Since joining back in January, the 30-year-old has made 14 appearances for the Magpies but has only been able to find the back of the net on two occasions.

And only one of those goals has come from open play with the £27m winter signing scoring the winner from the spot against Wolverhampton Wanderers the other week.

And it was apparent he did not exactly impress Buck on Wednesday night despite lasting the full 90 minutes of the game under the lights at St. James’ Park:

“Held the ball up well but struggled to link the play at times. Didn’t have a chance at goal the whole game,” wrote Buck for the Shields Gazette.

How well do you remember Newcastle's January transfer window? An easy one to start with: where did Newcastle sign Bruno Guimaraes from?

TIF Thoughts on Buck’s comments…

Wood’s arrival on Tyneside was thought to help fill the void left behind by the club’s top scorer this season, Callum Wilson, who is currently sidelined through injuries.

However, that has not been the case and it seems Wood’s struggles continued on Wednesday as he failed to find the back of the net.

In fact, Wood failed to register a single shot at all throughout the 90 minutes. He also lost the ball 15 times and only completed 61% (14/23) of his attempted passes (via SofaScore).

With the signing of Wood not exactly proving an instant hit on Tyneside, we do wonder what type of role he will play next season?
