Pundit Barry Ferguson has claimed that Steven Davis not featuring regularly for Rangers this season is down to injury issues.

Steven Davis has featured 13 times in the Scottish Premiership for Rangers this season but has made just two appearances this calendar year for the Gers in all competitions.

Davis has recently turned 37 years old and his contract is set to expire at the end of the season. He has suffered injuries this season and been out of form which has led to a lack of game time, so he may part ways with the club in the summer.

With the Northern Irish midfielder out of contract at the end of the season, Barry Ferguson claimed whilst talking on the Go Radio Podcast that Davis should be offered a new deal in the summer.

Should Steven Davis be offered a new contract?

Yes

Yes

No

No

“No. He did have a few injury niggles, and I was listening to an interview before he went away with [Northern] Ireland where he said he had a couple of injuries,” quote taken from Go Radio Podcast, as per Ibrox news.

“That is the reason he wasn’t in the team.

“He is a proper footballer, Steven Davis. I’ve played with him and he brings a real calmness to the pitch. When he comes on he keeps everybody at ease by just sitting in that anchor role.

“He plays the game simple but it’s so effective. He made the difference when he came on (against Celtic) and he did similar in the St Mirren game in the previous Sunday to that.

“In terms of staying on, I’m sure he’s fit enough to play. I think he will leave it until the end of the season and make the decision himself. If he’s willing to play on I would 100 per cent give him another contract,” he said.

TIF Thoughts on Barry Ferguson’s comments…

Steven Davis has featured sparingly for Rangers this season, and he has been out of form when he has played. In the Scottish Premiership, he has zero goals and one assist, he has won 46% of his total duels and makes an average of 0.7 interceptions per game, as per Sofascore.

Considering Davis is 37 years old and has barely featured in the second half of the season, it is hard to see him being offered a new deal ahead of next year, as he will not be likely to play much at all next campaign.
