Celtic earning a spot in next season’s elite competition could be crucial in their hopes of landing Cameron Carter-Vickers on a permanent deal.

Football writer Pete O’Rourke was speaking to This Is Futbol about the future of the Tottenham Hotspur man following his impressive display on the weekend.

Would you pay up to £10m for CCV?

Contractually, the American centre-back only has a number of months remaining on his deal with the Bhoys as the loan agreement is set to expire at the end of the campaign.

However, Ange Postecoglou has made it no secret he would like to see the 24-year-old sign permanently and continue playing his football at Parkhead.

But with Celtic sitting top of the Premiership table and six points clear of their city rivals, O’Rourke still feels clinching a spot in next season’s Champions League will be crucial:

I think Champions League football could be crucial to this deal getting done. I’m sure Carter-Vickers would love the opportunity to pit his wits against the best teams in Europe, which obviously you can do in the Champions League,” said O’Rourke.

“And obviously will boost Celtic’s financial coffers as well to go and complete a deal here for Carter-Vickers.”

TIF Thoughts on O’Rourke’s comments…

We agree with O’Rourke’s claim regarding the finances of the Champions League qualification being a big boost for the Bhoys in the summer.

It is believed a permanent deal for the centre-back would start at £6m but could work its way all the way up to £10m in add-ons and if that is the case it could put the American as their record signing.

And with Premier League clubs believed to be eyeing the 24-year-old, playing among Europe’s elite would only add to the pull of playing at Parkhead next season having already become a mainstay in the XI.
