Image for West Ham United: Gold makes Fabianski faux-pas

West Ham United fans will undoubtedly be left feeling perplexed after chairman David Gold wished goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski a happy birthday on Twitter using a photo of him during his time at Arsenal.

Fabianski spent seven years in north London and joined the Hammers in 2018. He has since made 134 appearances for the Irons, evolving into one of David Moyes’ most trusted players. On Monday, the Poland international turned 37, which could be his last birthday at the club as his contract runs out at the end of the season – although he is expected to extend his stay.

How well do you know where West Ham's signings came from? Take our quiz to find out! First up, where did Fabian Balbuena come in from?

Instead of using a photo of Fabianski during his four years in east London, of which there are plenty, Gold selected an image of him at Arsenal, which will surely leave West Ham supporters pretty baffled.

TIF Thoughts on Gold’s faux-pas…

Since acquiring 50% of the club alongside David Sullivan in 2010, Gold has been regularly criticised by the West Ham supporters, with many suggesting he does not have the club’s best interests at heart. He came under particular fire in 2016, when West Ham moved from Upton Park to the London Stadium, despite it being a fair way from the prior ground. Initially, the atmosphere was particularly miserable, although it has improved as their spell in Stratford has progressed.

Poor performances in the past and a perceived lack of investment have also led fans to unleash their wrath at Gold. This Fabianski post is far from his worst crime and is perhaps just an honest mistake, but the West Ham faithful were not willing to let the faux-pas go without comment. Even during the club’s most successful spell this century, Gold appears to still be the villain.
