According to journalist Pete O’Rourke, Tottenham winger Steven Bergwijn will “definitely” attract interest during the summer transfer window.

Bergwijn was last in action on Sunday as Spurs trounced Newcastle United 5-1, the Dutchman even getting himself on the scoresheet. However, he has featured just 19 times in the Premier League this term, and has been included in the starting XI on just four occasions. In January, the 24-year-old appeared on the verge of a move to Ajax before negotiations fell through.

Speaking to GiveMeSport, O’Rourke believes clubs will be in pursuit of Bergwijn this summer. He said: “I think there will definitely be interest in Bergwijn, who’s even further down the pecking order at Tottenham right now.”

TIF Thoughts on Bergwijn’s future…

Interestingly, Conte has warned Bergwijn that he needs to believe in himself if he is to stay at Spurs.

£16.2m-valued Bergwijn arrived in north London as an exciting talent. At PSV Eindhoven, he netted 31 goals and provided 41 assists in 149 games, and already had nine caps for the Netherlands to his name.

He announced himself to the Premier League in stunning fashion, scoring on his debut in a 2-0 win over Manchester City, but while he has provided a few memorable moments since, such as his last-gasp brace in the 3-2 win over Leicester City earlier this campaign, he has not made the impact many will have hoped for.

All in all, he has managed just eight goals and 10 assists in 77 games. Now in his third season at the club, he has failed to nail down a regular starting spot. The signing of Dejan Kulusevski is another obstacle in Bergwijn’s path to the first team, especially given the Sweden international already has two goals and five assists in 10 league outings.

How many points did Tottenham gain in the following seasons? First up: 2020/21

During the winter transfer window, Spurs were said to be looking for €25m (£20.9m) to part ways with the forward. They spent £27m on his services back in 2020, considerably more than the fee they wanted just three months ago, which only shows in which direction his career has gone.

Kulusevski already looks to be an Antonio Conte favourite, which suggests that unless Bergwijn is happy to play a bit-part role at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, he should look to move in the summer. Given his age and performances at PSV, O’Rourke’s prediction should come true.
