Tottenham Hotspur boss Antonio Conte is unlikely to play Steven Bergwijn at right wing-back on the weekend.

That is according to the reliable Spurs correspondent Charlie Eccleshare who was speaking on The View From The Lane podcast ahead of the clash against Leicester City.

Would you play a winger at RWB instead of Emerson?

No

It has been a tricky fortnight for Conte’s men who have seen their spot in the top four slip away amid their struggles offensively in their previous two games.

In Tottenham’s last 180 minutes of football against Brighton & Hove Albion and Brentford, the North London side have been unable to land a single shot on goal.

And this has raised the question of whether Conte will look to make a change to his team selection with the two wing-backs failing to impress:

“I do remember speaking to people at Spurs about this early on and saying, you know, has that been suggested? But certainly, the impression on Bergwijn was always that no, he was going to remain in the position that he’s always played. And that’s been the case, maybe now in extreme [circumstances] that will change.”

TIF Thoughts on Eccleshare’s comments…

We do feel Eccleshare’s comments may disappoint a number of Spurs fans given Emerson Royal has struggled so much since arriving to England in the summer.

The Brazilian does not provide Spurs with an attacking threat and has just the single goal and assist to his name across all competitions despite making 39 appearances across all competitions.

Although it may disappoint Spurs fans, it is perhaps not too surprising given Conte has stuck pretty firmly to his selection choices at Spurs with Emerson playing almost the full 90 minutes against Brentford despite failing to provide an impact.

It has been a difficult campaign for Bergwijn who made the headlines these two sides last met, and it does not sound as if Conte will be taking a gamble with the forward at wing-back on Saturday.
