Tottenham Hotspur will have their eyes set on bringing in a new left wing-back in the summer transfer window, according to Pete O’Rourke.

The football journalist has been speaking to This Is Futbol ahead of the upcoming summer market with Spurs hoping to have the lure of Champions League football on their side.

One position that O’Rourke feels can be improved and will be a focus in the summer is left wing-back with the £27m man, Sergio Reguilon, failing to set the league alight since arriving in 2020.

The former Real Madrid man has now made 62 appearances for the North London club across all competitions but has only been able to provide two goals and nine assists (via Transfermarkt).

And his competition for the starting spot, Ryan Sessegnon, has shown an inability to remain injury-free which has seen his spot in the starting XI handed back to the Spaniard in recent weeks.

O’Rourke said: “I think it will be a key position for Conte this summer to bring in a left wing-back to try and improve his squad. As you said, Matt Doherty has been playing there as well at left wing-back and he’s done okay as well as right wing-back.

“But I think those two positions, wing-backs, are key to Conte’s system and how they go about things. So I think if he could get somebody who can definitely improve at left wing-back, I’m sure it’s something he will definitely consider.”

TIF Thoughts on O’Rourke’s comments…

We absolutely agree with O’Rourke. Under a manager like Conte who plays with wing-backs, you need to have reliable options on either side and Spurs simply do not have that.

Matt Doherty has shown a lot of improvement recently, however, there is a lot left to be desired on the left-hand side of the pitch with Reguilon, in particular.

The Spaniard was awarded with just a 4/10 rating for his last outing against Brighton & Hove Albion and Sessegnon’s injury record is an obvious concern.

So, if there is the funds to invest in that position, we feel it could provide Spurs with a big improvement going into the 2022/23 campaign.
