Football writer Rob Guest has tipped Tottenham Hotspur manager Antonio Conte to play Ryan Sessegnon at right wing-back.

Unfortunately for Spurs, Matt Doherty – who had been excelling in that position of late – has picked up a bad injury and will not play again for the club this season.

Against Brighton & Hove Albion on the weekend, Emerson Royal started in the role, but with his side falling to a 1-0 defeat, Conte may want to mix things up to get Tottenham back to winning ways.

With all that in mind, Guest suggested Sessegnon could be a good fit for the role, despite usually operating on the left.

He wrote for football.london: “One player who could be a wildcard option to play on the right if Conte feels a change is necessary is indeed Sessegnon.

“The 21-year-old has experience of operating from the right during his time at Fulham even though he is a left-sided player by trade.”

TIF Thoughts on Ryan Sessegnon and Spurs…

As Guest mentions, Sessegnon has operated on the right side of attack before for Fulham, and he did so on a number of occasions for the club during the 2018/19 season in the Premier League.

However, it would still pose as a pretty big gamble from Conte given that he is not particularly experienced in that role, especially when being asked to operate as a defender.

Still, with Emerson playing pretty poorly against Brighton – with fans on the BBC’s Player Rater giving him a score of just 2.94 – the Italian may well feel that something has to change.

Partly due to injuries, Sessegnon has been unable to nail down a regular starting spot this season. Perhaps, though, if he can stay fit, this new role could allow him to stake a claim to be a key part of Conte’s plans going forward.
