Image for Tottenham Hotspur: Romano hints at 3-4 signings

Spurs have come far under new boss Antonio Conte so far this season, with January signings Dejan Kulusevski and Rodrigo Bentancur seamlessly fitting in. However, this is only the start of their transfer business, according to Fabrizio Romano.

During Conte’s first window with the north London outfit, they started to reshape the squad in his image, ridding themselves of deadwood like Tanguy Ndombele, Giovani Lo Celso, Dele Alli and loaned out youngster Bryan Gil. Conte then acquired Kulusevski and Bentancur, who have both impacted the squad for the better and helped Spurs’ resurgence towards a top-four finish and Champions League football next season.

This, however, is only going to be the start for Conte, as he will want to be backed by Spurs and continue his ambition of building the team through the transfer market, and after seeing how well his two January signings have started life in London, this is surely a no-brainer.

Insider Romano has hinted at these transfer demands while talking on the Que Golazo podcast, stating the Italian will want ‘many’ names through the door, especially with the possible addition of Champions League football as well.

He said: “When Antonio says about ambition, it means to sign important players to rebuild parts of the team, so he’s doing a miracle, in my opinion, with this team, but at the same point, he knows that it’s impossible next season – especially if you have Champions League football, so another important competition – to continue with the same team, so they need to sign many important players. When I say many, I mean like three, four important signings.”

TIF Thoughts on Spurs summer plans…

Daniel Levy and the rest of the Spurs hierarchy need to back Conte if they want more success than they have had in the club’s recent history. If the owners have ambitions similar to Conte – to compete in the Champions League and win the Premier League – they need to put their money where their mouth is and provide ample support to the Italian.

If they fail to do this, they run the risk of potentially losing the serial winner and continuing their long silverware drought. We feel they need to turn the loans of Ndombele and Lo Celso into permanent deals and accrue as much money as they can for the duo in order to help fund new transfers that Conte will demand.

Conte can only take this current squad so far, as without financial backing they may be able to compete for Champions League qualification, but that could be where the ride ends. They need to spend money and they need to spend it now to take that next step.
