Tottenham Hotspur have long been linked with Argentina and Inter striker Lautaro Martinez, and according to Fabrizio Romano, there could be a “possibility” the club sign him this summer.

The north London club were originally linked with Martinez last summer and reportedly submitted a £60m offer, which was later rebuffed as Inter were reluctant to let him go after they sold his striking partner Romelu Lukaku to Chelsea for £97.5m.

However, since the arrival of the Argentinian’s former manager, Antonio Conte, the rumours of the club’s interest have sparked again. Reports say they are interested in Martinez either as a partner to current star man Harry Kane or as a possible replacement should the Englishman leave in the summer.

The latest development comes from Romano, who spoke on the Que Golazo podcast and admitted Spurs could have a good chance of signing the player when the transfer window opens.

He stated: “They wanted him last summer, could be a good possibility. They wanted him, but Inter sold Lukaku to Chelsea, so it was impossible for them to sell both Lukaku and Lautaro. This summer, I think it could be a possibility.”

TIF Thoughts on Spurs’ possible Martinez move…

The most important thing for Daniel Levy and the rest of the Spurs board is to make sure they fully back Conte in the summer and show the manager, as well as star man Kane, that they are serious about wanting to win silverware in the short-term future.

This will likely mean that forking out the required sum for players like Martinez is going to have to happen as soon as possible. They will desperately need to show they mean business, as if they fail to do this, it could mean both leave, and the club therefore run the risk of slipping into trophyless mediocrity for the foreseeable future.

Martinez is a perfect way the club can show this seriousness to win. The Argentinian has proven he is one of the top prospects in world football and based on his previous partnership with Lukaku at Inter, he could very well be the man to partner Kane up front.

The Inter man has racked up 16 goals and two assists this season on his own, but with Lukaku last season, he impressed with 19 goals and 11 assists, proving he can work perfectly in a partnership with a prolific goalscorer. He also boasts 2.9 shots and one key pass per game with a 74% pass accuracy this season for the Nerazzurri (as per WhoScored) as they fight it out for their second consecutive Serie A title with city rivals Milan.

On paper, Martinez and Kane should work well together, and even if Kane leaves, they would have a young and exciting striker to replace him moving forward.
