Tottenham Hotspur are in pole position to complete the signing of the soon-to-be free agent Sam Johnstone in the summer transfer window.

This is according to Spurs correspondent Alasdair Gold, who was speaking on the latest episode of the Gold & Guest Talk Tottenham podcast.

The West Bromwich Albion goalkeeper will see his contract run out at the end of the campaign having joined the Baggies back in 2018 from Manchester United.

And there have been a number of clubs linked with making a swoop for the 29-year-old ahead of the summer, however, Gold feels the Lilywhites are now leading the race.

Current No 2 goalkeeper Pierluigi Gollini is now expected to return to Atalanta in the summer with his deal unlikely to be made permanent, leaving a potential vacancy as Hugo Lloris’ backup.

Gold said: “From what I understand, Spurs are the favourites to get it done. Obviously, nothing can be sealed and signed until I think it’s May for any kind of domestic free transfers.

“But yeah, from what I understand, he’s on a shortlist of about three or four names for the backup goalkeeping role and I think Spurs probably are in pole position to bring him to Tottenham.”

TIF Thoughts on Gold’s comments…

We think this would be an extremely smart piece of business if Fabio Paratici was able to land the England international in the summer on a free.

Gollini has failed to impress since joining in the summer on loan and the addition of the England international would seem an upgrade on paper, with Johnstone a regular for the Baggies.

We think Johnstone could potentially prove a bigger threat to Lloris’ spot between the sticks as he aims to keep his spot in the national side and prove himself as a top-flight goalkeeper having played in the Championship this season.

With the position of second-choice goalkeeper likely to be an area to address, signing a player with Premier League experience on a free would look to be a smart move, with Conte hoping for a big summer.
