According to journalist Jack Pitt-Brooke, Tottenham Hotspur were unlucky to end their game on the weekend still facing 11 men.

Antonio Conte’s men cruised to a 5-1 victory on Sunday against Newcastle United, but Pitt-Brooke feels Dan Burn should have been shown a second yellow card during the game.

Should Burn have been sent off?

No

No

Spurs flexed their muscles in the second half against Eddie Howe’s side having netted four times after the interval to climb up into the top four of the Premier League.

Newcastle defender Burn received a yellow card early in the second half of the game in north London after a late challenge on Harry Kane.

And Pitt-Brooke spoke on The View From The Lane podcast to hint that the 29-year-old defender was fortunate to remain on the pitch for the entire game.

He said: “Burn should have been sent off. He was on a yellow and then he pulled back Lucas cynically when Lucas set up Bergwijn.

“Now, this might be a kind of ‘you are the ref’ thing, so I don’t actually know the answer here. But just because Bergwijn scored doesn’t mean that Burn shouldn’t have been sent off, because it wouldn’t have been a red card for denying a clear goalscoring opportunity, right? It was a professional foul, he should still have been sent off.”

TIF Thoughts on Pitt-Brooke’s comments…

We have to agree with Pitt-Brooke, the 29-year-old – on a number of occasions – could have seen himself awarded a second yellow card.

Ultimately, the decision not to award Burn a second yellow card did not have much of an effect on the game as Spurs put the Toon to the sword.

However, had the result not gone in the favour of the home side, there almost certainly would have been some serious questioning over Martin Atkinson’s refereeing.
