Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson has claimed that Harry Kane may opt to stay at Spurs in search to break Alan Shearer’s record.

Harry Kane has been in instrumental form for Spurs recently, he has scored seven goals and assisted three times in his last seven Premier League games, whereas before the new year, he scored just five goals in his opening 21 league fixtures.

The Spurs forward was heavily linked with a move away from the club in the summer, but a move to Manchester City failed to go through. With the news that City are close to signing Erling Haaland, Kane has been linked with a move to the red side of Manchester.

Despite being linked with a move away from Spurs, Paul Merson has claimed that he believes Harry Kane may stay at the club and look to break Shearer’s record as he spoke to Sportskeeda.

“Will he look to move on in search of trophies or stay at Tottenham to break Alan Shearer’s goalscoring record? Something tells me he might stay – his mind is probably made up already!” Merson said.

TIF Thoughts on Paul Merson’s comments…

Of course, Spurs fans will love Paul Merson’s comments for two big reasons. The fact that he’s an Arsenal fan predicting something positive for once at Tottenham and just purely because of the fact that Harry Kane has been so important for the north London club in recent times.

Indeed, despite having a poor first half to the season, he has still created 13 big chances in the Premier League this season, has an average of 3.4 shots per game and has 17 goal contributions in 28 games, as per Sofascore. He has the highest average rating of any Spurs player in the Premier League and averages 1.3 key passes and 1.5 dribbles.

Antonio Conte has spoken very highly of Harry Kane and is evidently a big fan of the striker, so the last thing Spurs will want is to see the Englishman leave as it could be the final straw for the north London club’s boss who has already threatened to quit.

Antonio Conte could be the man to get new talent in the door in the summer, to help Spurs push on and win their first trophy in 16 years, and with them being linked to players such as Paulo Dybala, this could be enough to convince Harry Kane to stay at the club.

However, if Spurs do not show any ambition in the summer transfer window, then Kane may well leave, as he is yet to win a trophy in his career so far and has signalled for Levy to get his act together.
