Journalist Alasdair Gold has praised Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur for his display in the club’s most recent Premier League win.

On Sunday, Antonio Conte’s men lifted themselves into fourth place as they thrashed Newcastle United 5-1 at home thanks to goals from Ben Davies, Matt Doherty,  Son Heung-min, Emerson Royal and Steven Bergwijn.

And while the Uruguayan may not have added his name to the scoresheet, his performance was still enough to earn a notable review from Gold.

Is Rodrigo Bentancur Spurs' best midfielder?

No

Indeed, the writer gave Bentancur an 8/10 match rating for football.london, saying he looked like a ‘top-drawer’ player in England’s top flight.

He wrote: “Picked up a yellow card in the first half after a scuffle but was composed from then on and got another 75 minutes under his belt where he looked a top-drawer Premier League player.”

Gold’s comments are well justified, with the midfielder racking up an impressive 72 touches and a 90% passing accuracy.

TIF Thoughts on Rodrigo Bentancur and Spurs…

This January, Bentancur joined Tottenham on a permanent deal, signing a four-and-a-half-year contract after Juventus were paid a reported £15.8m (with £5.7m due in potential add-ons) for his services.

In the short time since he has arrived, he has already made himself a key part of Conte’s plans. Indeed, he has started in eight of the nine league games he has been available for, with Spurs winning five of those matches.

No doubt, if he continues to play as well as he did against the Magpies, Bentancur could well end up helping his team achieve Champions League football at the end of the season.

One thing is for sure, as Gold says, he already looks more than capable of thriving in the Premier League.
