Newcastle United are one of the sides who are showing an interest in Bologna defender Aaron Hickey ahead of the summer.

This is according to the transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, who was speaking on the latest episode of the Here We Go podcast to discuss the upcoming transfer window.

And the Italian believes the Tyneside club have set their sights on the in-demand youngster, who has also been reportedly targeted by a large number of Premier League sides.

Eddie Howe added Matt Targett to his options at left-back in January, however, the Aston Villa ace is set to return to his parent club at the end of the campaign with the move only a short-term loan deal.

Hickey has been a mainstay in the Serie A club’s XI this season, with 28 appearances in the Italian top flight, but Romano feels his future may lie in the Premier League.

He said: “Now Newcastle are following him, you know, they wanted a left-back, even in January with Robin Gosens one of the options.

“But now, Aaron Hickey is on [the] Newcastle list, and so keep an eye on Hickey because he’s a fantastic talent. I really love this player and I’m sure he will be one of the best left-backs in the world in the coming years and Newcastle are monitoring him.”

TIF Thoughts on Romano’s comments…

This should certainly be exciting to hear for the Toon fans with some of the Premier League’s biggest clubs believed to be monitoring the 19-year-old.

The left-back position could certainly be viewed as being an area to improve with Targett not set to be at St James’ Park next season.

And with big ambitions for the future of the Magpies, the in-demand youngster could be viewed as an option to take the club forward in the long term rather than being a short-term fix as Targett may well be.
