Journalist Pete O’Rourke has tipped Newcastle United to make a move for Tottenham Hotspur defensive midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, calling it a ‘really good’ signing for them if they were to get a deal done.

Newcastle have successfully begun a rebuild under their new owners in the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia, with their £91.8 million spending spree in January bringing in the likes of Bruno Guimaraes, Chris Wood and Kieran Trippier. And they don’t seem to be stopping anytime soon, as a number of summer transfer rumours have risen – with the most recent one involving Spurs man Hojbjerg.

Since his arrival from fellow Premier League club Southampton in August 2020, the Danish midfielder has enjoyed a healthy amount of game time at the north London side, appearing 96 times in his two seasons. However, with the signing of Rodrigo Bentancur and the emergence of academy product Oliver Skipp, the opportunity for game time moving forward may find itself hard to come by for the Dane.

An easy one to start with, which player was booked after pushing Bentancur to the ground?

Newcastle have looked vastly improved under Eddie Howe this season, moving from the relegation zone to ninth place in a matter of months after winning nine of their last 13 games, including impressive wins over Wolves, Leicester City, and Brighton & Hove Albion – and will look to continue their improved form next season with signings to help them.

Speaking to GiveMeSport, O’Rourke believes they will continue to work on their project of improving the squad, pointing at Hojbjerg as a good option to help them at this stage of it, amid rumours that Howe is interested in bringing the Spurs man to Tyneside.

O’Rourke said: “For Newcastle, this ambitious project, they want to continue to improve the squad, and somebody like a Hojbjerg would be a really good signing for them right now.

“He’s got lots of experience from his time at Southampton as well. So, Eddie Howe has done his homework on Hojbjerg, and I’m sure if he was to get him, it would be a top signing for Newcastle.”

TIF Thoughts on Hojbjerg…

The Spurs midfielder has been a good servant for the club since his £14.94m arrival under Jose Mourinho back in 2020, but with Spurs looking to redevelop under new boss Antonio Conte and the competition he will face from the likes of Bentancur and Skipp, it could be a good idea for Hojbjerg to move on, and there is arguably fewer places better to go right now than Newcastle.

Should Newcastle sign Hojbjerg?

So far this season, the Danish international has made 43 appearances in all competitions for the Lilywhites with injuries to Skipp and the late arrival of Bentancur being factors.

In this time, he has managed three goals and four assists while averaging 1.9 tackles, 1.4 interceptions, 1.1 clearances and 1.1 dribbles per game on the defensive side of the ball. He has also been useful going forward, averaging 0.8 key passes per game with 3.2 long balls alongside an 88.3% pass completion rate (WhoScored).

Joining Newcastle would be a good move for both the club and the player, Newcastle would get a proven Premier League-level midfielder to partner impressive January signing Guimaraes, and Hojbjerg will get the opportunity to continue to play consistently at the highest level while working with a team who could also challenge for European football next season. It’s potentially a win-win scenario for all concerned.
