Journalist Dean Jones has claimed that Diego Carlos is not necessarily someone Newcastle United are interested in.

Newcastle have been linked to a raft of players after their newfound wealth since their takeover, and in January, the Magpies had an offer rejected for the highly sought-after defender from Sevilla.

Following the rejection from the La Liga side, Newcastle managed to sign Dan Burn from Brighton & Hove Albion, and he has been impressive since his introduction at St James’ Park. The side have lost just three times in their last 12 Premier League games, having lost 10 of their opening 18 matches.

With the introduction of Burn, a central defender may not be top of the list for Newcastle in the summer, and whilst speaking to GiveMeSport, Jones highlighted that the interest for the Brazilian has dropped off after their rejected bid.

He said: “Asking people around the club in the last week or so, it doesn’t really seem to be one that people are talking about.”

TIF Thoughts on Dean Jones’ comments…

So, it looks as if Newcastle have made a big U-turn on the defender as he was described as their ‘top target’ back in the January transfer window, but is seemingly no longer even being considered.

Diego Carlos is currently valued at just over £40m by Transfermarkt and has been superb for Sevilla in La Liga this season. He has been named in SofaScore’s Team of the Week five times, has an average passing accuracy of 88% and has helped his side keep 12 clean sheets in 26 league appearances.

Sevilla are a side in the Champions League places, so it would be a strange move for Carlos to step down to a side that doesn’t play in any European competition at all. However, with their newfound wealth, Newcastle can perhaps offer him money that he may not have been before, so this could be enough to lure him in.

It will be interesting to see what transfers Newcastle manage to complete in the summer, as the fact that they don’t compete in Europe could be a big put-off for many top players.
