Journalist Keith Downie has claimed that Jesse Lingard moving to Newcastle United would have happened in January but not in the summer.

Jesse Lingard has been seriously out of favour for Manchester United this season, he has made 16 appearances in the Premier League but just two of those have been starts. The English midfielder spent last season on loan with West Ham where he impressed by scoring nine goals in 16 games but has not been given a chance this term.

The 29-year-olds contract is set to expire at the end of the season, and Newcastle United were reportedly interested in signing him in January, but the deal failed to go through.

Despite Lingard’s contract is up at the end of the season, Keith Downie insisted to GiveMeSport that Newcastle will not be in the race to sign him in the summer.

“Jesse Lingard, I’ve got a feeling he was one of those ones for January and would be unlikely for the summer.

“I might be wrong, but I just got the feeling he was one of those kind of short-term targets until the end of the season. I just don’t know if he’d be a project signing for the club. I may be wrong, but I just got the feeling he was for January,” Downie said.

TIF Thoughts on Keith Downie’s comments…

Despite not featuring much this season, Jesse Lingard was in impressive form for West Ham whilst on loan last season. In the Premier League for the Hammers, he had the highest average player rating (7.19), the second amount of goal contributions with 13, despite only featuring in the second half of the season, and had the fourth most successful dribbles per game on average (1.3), as per Sofascore.

If Lingard can get back to enjoying his football, and back to the form that he showed whilst on loan last season, then he would be a great addition to the majority of the Premier League sides, but it may be deemed as a risk to bring him in on a big-money contract if he doesn’t perform.
