Liverpool fans will love footage of Tyler Morton’s strike for Liverpool’s U23s during their 4-1 win over Blackpool on Monday – and it may even have reminded them of Steven Gerrard.

The Reds’ youth side were in action in the semi-final of the Lancashire Senior Cup, and they put in a solid performance to progress to the final of the competition. 19-year-old Morton had failed to find the back of the net so far this term, but he did so for the first time against Blackpool – and in stunning fashion.

How well do you know these Liverpool squad numbers? Starting off with an easy one: Mo Salah

As a video shared on Liverpool’s official Twitter account showed, Morton picked the ball up on the right-hand side of the box. With a shot seemingly not on, the midfielder still managed to drill the ball into the opposite corner to put his side 3-0 up.

TIF Thoughts on Morton’s strike…

This was a strike that Gerrard himself would have been proud of, and gives added value to the albeit premature comparisons between the former Liverpool captain and Morton. Some supporters already see some of the club legend in the teenager, and strikes such as the one against the Seasiders will only give them further hope he can somewhat emulate the current Aston Villa manager.

Morton has already worked his way into Jurgen Klopp’s plans. He has featured nine times for the first team this term, with appearances coming in all four competitions. At youth level, he has struggled to find the back of the net, but as 10 goals in 25 appearances in all competitions last term show, he is handy in front of goal.

The youngster himself has previously named Gerrard and Thiago Alcantara amongst his influences. Those two are very different players, but it could be a lethal combination if Morton could take the best parts of their respective styles and put them together.
