Journalist Conor McGilligan has taken to Twitter to discuss Leeds United’s failure to sign Lewis O’Brien last summer and how some fans didn’t want him at the club.

McGilligan will have had O’Brien at the front of his mind after seeing the midfielder’s Huddersfield Town record a 2-0 victory away at Middlesbrough which has all but confirmed their spot in the Championship play-offs.

Would you like to see Leeds sign O'Brien?

Yes!

Yes!

No!

No!

The midfielder put in a dominant display for the Terriers, racking up a 7.36 WhoScored rating, made one key pass, got one assist and racked up 34 touches, so the £13m that Leeds United reportedly saw rejected – according to Huddersfield chairman Phil Hodgkinson – would have been a snip had he put up those sort of numbers for the Whites during their injury-hit season.

Meanwhile, it has been claimed that there is a £12m release clause in the contract O’Brien recently signed.

With Huddersfield looking to have a great chance of promotion into the Premier League, it could be very difficult to prise O’Brien to Elland Road this summer if Huddersfield do go up, seemingly making it even more baffling for McGilligan who tweeted: “Makes me laugh Leeds fans didn’t want us to touch Lewis O’Brien – such a good player.”

This was a low point in Leeds United's history, but how many points did they get in the 2003/04 campaign?

TIF Thoughts on O’Brien…

Even if some Leeds fans weren’t convinced by O’Brien last summer, their injury crisis in midfield and their severe lack of options for the majority of the campaign, coupled with how O’Brien did live on Sky Sports yesterday, surely with hindsight, shows how it could have been an astute piece of business.

While O’Brien is performing in the Championship and is yet to step up and test himself in the Premier League, he can only play against the opposition in front of him in England’s second tier, so many fans will be eagerly looking on next season at the midfielder if the Terriers manage to secure promotion.
