Leeds United edged a point closer to Premier League safety after drawing at Elland Road on Saturday afternoon.

Jesse Marsch’s side took the lead through Jack Harrison before the Saints levelled with yet another free-kick goal from James Ward-Prowse. Neither side was able to find a winner, with both sets of players having to settle for a point.

Despite the point, the Leeds fans will be fuming with what they saw as they appear to have been robbed of a clear penalty for a challenge on Joe Gelhardt.

The video was shared on Twitter (originally filmed by Lewis Deighton), with supporters baffled it wasn’t overturned.

TIF thoughts on the footage…

This was a low point in Leeds United's history, but how many points did they get in the 2003/04 campaign?

From the angle shared, you can see why they’re annoyed too. It appears that Gelhardt is tripped in the box as he looks to power past the defender towards goal, as he’s just able to get to the ball first to move it away from the defender before being seemingly taken out.

Mike Dean looked at the challenge but it was seemingly deemed not to have been a penalty, which seems quite surprising given the footage appears to show a clip of the attacker. However, this isn’t the first time this season that Dean has been involved in controversy as he admitted to an error whilst officiating West Brom, and it doesn’t look good for the future of VAR as Dean is supposedly seen as the man to take it forward.

Although Leeds are now eight points ahead of the relegation zone, three points would have even further cemented the likelihood of the Whites’ safety. Instead, Watford have a game in hand and Burnley have three games in hand, so it is still possible that Jesse Marsch’s side could creep slightly closer to trouble, with two points possibly making a huge difference.
