Journalist Dean Jones has claimed that Barcelona defender Sergino Dest would be a huge signing for Leeds United in the summer.

Dest has been linked with a move away from Barcelona in the summer and Leeds United have started to show interest in the youngster’s signature. Other clubs such as Bayern Munich are reportedly in the running for his signature.

The Barcelona defender has featured sparingly for his side this season. In La Liga, he has started just 15 times and made three more appearances from the bench. Dest is just 21 years old and his current contract is set to expire in the summer of 2025.

With the lack of game time, Dest has been on the radar of many clubs, and whilst speaking to GiveMeSport, Jones highlighted how good the business would be if Leeds beat Bayern Munich in the race to sign him.

He said: “That would be a hell of a coup if they were to sign Dest ahead of people like Bayern Munich.”

TIF Thoughts on Dean Jones’ comments…

Dest signed for Barcelona in 2020 for £18.9m and has had a mixed bag in terms of stats this campaign. In La Liga, he has an average passing accuracy of 92% per game and has created five big chances for his side, but he also averages just 0.8 tackles per game and wins the ball back 0.2 times per game, as per Sofascore.

With Bayern Munich a potential destination for the American defender, it could be hard to see how Leeds can lure him into Elland Road. But with new boss and fellow American Jesse Marsch’s ambitions at the club, anything could be possible.

Dest also shares an agent with three Leeds players – Patrick Bamford, Daniel James and Luke Ayling – so perhaps a word in the right ear could go a long way.

Leeds have struggled defensively this campaign – they have conceded the most goals in the league (68), so there will be no doubt that Marsch will be seeking to improve on that area ahead of the new season.
