Stan Collymore has called Everton’s Anthony Gordon targeting of Trent Alexander-Arnold down the right flank during the Merseyside derby “healthy disrespect”.

Besides a deserved yellow card aside for diving, Gordon was one of the Toffees’ brightest sparks during their 2-0 defeat to Liverpool. He caused Alexander-Arnold numerous problems with his speed and perhaps could have even earned his team a penalty after a coming-together with Joel Matip.

Do you remember who Alex Iwobi was signed from?

Writing on Twitter, Collymore discussed Frank Lampard’s call to have the youngster go at the Reds right-back, saying: “A healthy disrespect shown to Trent’s defensive ability from the Everton technical staff by telling a rookie to run him at every opportunity.”

TIF Thoughts on Gordon…

Alexander-Arnold may be fantastic going forward – 44 assists in the Premier League since the start of the 2018/19 campaign are proof of that – but he is undoubtedly a little suspect defensively. Pundits have questioned his ability going backwards, and even though Jurgen Klopp has come out in defence of his defending, it was perhaps surprising how easy it was for Gordon to get past him at Anfield.

Liverpool have the team to deal with Alexander-Arnold’s forays forward and his defensive deficiencies, and Gordon’s endeavour didn’t help his side pick up any points. Still, it was an obvious ploy that almost paid dividends as plenty of Everton’s attacks came down Gordon’s side.

With six games left between now and the end of the season, Lampard will need the 21-year-old at his best if Everton are to stave off relegation and stay in the Premier League.
